this is the news live from berlin new york looks for glimmers of hope as the state records a new daily high in corona virus deaths you're frightening the truth thank god thank god through the u.s. sees merely 2000 covered 19 deaths for the 2nd day running for president trump is optimistic that there's a light at the end of the tunnel also coming up the end of the road for bernie sanders after 2 runs at the presidency the democratic senator from vermont and his

campaign to challenge president trump. plus it'll be a different sort of easter this year in jerusalem the coronavirus outbreak means congregations won't be able to get together but one organization is hoping to bring the services to them virtually. i'm told me a logical welcome to the program we began in the united states where new york state has reported its highest number of coronavirus deaths in a single day nearly 800 in the last 24 hours president trump has tried to reassure americans that the situation in the country is improving and that the u.s. is heading towards the final stretch in battling the virus in new york city one of the largest gothic cathedrals in the world is the latest venue to be converted into a makeshift hospital. beneath the stained glass windows this church

is getting ready for a different pace to crowd a significant weekend in the christian calendar president donald trump assured americans there is light at the end of the tunnel. would have many easter is together in churches in the future. we're getting closer you see the numbers we're getting much closer to getting our country back to the way it was. as new york's death toll climbed pos 6000 the state's governor moved to reassure residents we are flattening the curve thank god thank god thank god turn card. and think a lot of good people who are been working very hard that is a moment in time don't get complacent it's what we're doing that's working keep doing it that's the good news and the good news has

a big carob. we're still in the midst of it governor cuomo has directed all flags be flown at half mast in on our of the lives lost as the sun sets on the state's deadliest day yet a sense of solidarity reverberates around the city. bomber just james ronald joins us now from new york city james as bad as the numbers ah new york a 5th authorities are saying that the official death toll might actually be lower than the real numbers why is that. well one of the big mysteries in the coronavirus you know all over the world war the real number how many people are really infected what is the full scale of the number of people who
7:04 am
are dying and that's been true elsewhere and it's also true in new york and something got added to the confusion today and that is the number of people who are dying something like 200 people have been dying and every day in this study those numbers have not been added to the overall death toll and that's because these people are posturing away in their bedrooms and not being certified to not having tests done on their blood and so devoted to being taken to the morgue and then the cemeteries without putting to the hospitals where their numbers will be at the full death toll and so if you add those $200.00 per day on to the number of people who are dying then you are going to have. knowledge of the 779 deaths in the past 24 hours that's the highest that we've seen in the city so far. as mr cuomo said there is signs that were stacking the covenants because the number of people who are going into hospital for the time that started to come down even while the death

toll is going up how is new york's health care. holding up under the strain. i think i'd probably venture to say that they are being tested to their limits stretched about as far as they can go but also still to have holding. i've got to say that with the cab some of the stories we're hearing coming out of the hospital from the doctors from the medical staff. not having an authenticated not having enough protective equipment not having enough lives and gowns and one of the scariest thing is that you're hearing stories from doctors saying the best awning to show some of the coronavirus they're having this nickel they get in the cough and yet they've got to carry on working and they're on and off even those people on able to be tested so enormous problems of both equally we're hearing other bits of information we have
7:06 am
a fight coming out the white house for example that there is enough is enough equipment to go around and even from some people on the scene here that they're on a ventilator in the hospital and of course places like the ship that's more than the west side of manhattan they go up and out the day providing extra beds the people who need it james very briefly all the people in new york this is one of the world's busiest cities. yeah it's a city that never sleeps than definitely going to sleep right now i mean of course some people have had their life completely turned upside down by this because they've been directly affected by it i think themselves or a family member but of course that leaves roads and most of our people in the 10 plus 1000000 people who are facing all kinds of other difficulties. difficult to go shopping hard to get the plays they need and the worry about whether the. rent check is going to come from. james ryan in new york city thank you. staying in the u.s.

and senator bernie sanders has and that his presidential campaign that clears the way for joe biden to become the democratic party's nominee to challenge president donald trump in november's election the 78 year old sanders performed well in early primaries but then fell behind biden was built a substantial lead in the race for delegates to the party convention and here's what sanders said i will give you better news but i think you know the truth and that is that we are now with the 300 delegates behind vice president biden and the past point victory is virtually impossible so while we are winning the ideological battle and while we are winning with so many young people and working people throughout the country i have concluded that this for the democratic nomination will not be successful and so today i'm announcing with

a spray of my campaign w.'s washington correspondents jeff and simmons is following the story for us stephanie how surprising is this decision by bennett sound as depends on who you ask there are many many people out there was surprising that he does it now there are more out there was like we were actually surprised that he didn't do it earlier the math didn't add up for bernie sanders and he finally. got to grips about around this he got his head around this have no chance of of winning enough delegates to be joe biden and that triggered the decision today he also mentioned that he has another job to do which really needs attention and that is being a senator in the face of this coronavirus crisis we have here in the u.s. if you look back he started well but then seem to have run out of steam why's that . you know he never could mark 2 allies the moderate democratic crowd and the african-american vote he centers were strong with
7:09 am
progressive but not with moderates he was strong with young people and the 2nd problem is he then failed to really mobilize the young people who weren't his rallies by the thousands to come actually to the polls stations at the primaries and that sealed it for him ok so bernie sanders committed supporters now likely to fully back joe biden now. as fantastic question i wish i would have would know the answer but no no oracle here the judgment on this is out of course you would expect that most of the very senators followers would now put the bigger picture of the democratic win possible win in the amber at the presidential election in the forefront of their decision and swap to biden and support the biden biden campaign but that's not for sure and not really sure because why because
7:10 am
there is really this progress is clear and tell in the same this campaign which is now it's really disappointed and probably will have a hard time to put their vote behind joe biden they may decide to stay home and not vote at all which wouldn't be helping the democrats ok stephanie simmons in washington we'll leave it there for now thank you now returning to our coverage of the corona virus here are some of the latest developments in the pandemic the global death toll is approaching 90000 but nearly one and a half 1000000 confirmed infections since the outbreak began south korea has reported its smallest one day increase in new cases since february only 39 new infections were registered in the past 24 hours. british officials say that prime minister boris johnson's condition is improving and that he's in good spirits after

spending a 3rd day in tents of care and brazil's president bolton r.-o. has defended his response to the coronavirus crisis he said brazil had other big problems to tackle like unemployment which he said can also lead to death to israel now where a nationwide curfew has come into force as part of efforts to contain the corona virus is the beginning of the passover holiday and normally the roads would be packed as people make their way to large family gatherings not this year though celebrations will be confined to individual households as the government has banned into city travel until friday morning in a bid to stop colvin 19 from spreading further. meanwhile for christians there will be an easter in jerusalem unlike any other pilgrims have flocked to the city for thousands of years but due to the restrictions congregations will be unable to come together in the traditional way we caught up

with one organization that is hoping people can still celebrate with some sense of community this time in the digital world. a new sunday tradition an improvised altar is assembled on this rooftop overlooking jerusalem's old city since visitors are no longer able to come to the churches here the austrian hospital a catholic guesthouse is bringing the service to then virtually do you do you. yet still may now that the people can't come any more to jerusalem we bring jerusalem to the people into their farms on their screens and t.v. and want to keep doing that during the holy week and easter. sunday mass on a rooftop but without a congregation because the pandemic gatherings are no longer allow the service is live streamed using a mobile phone 2 floors down in the now closed coffee shop a young volunteer follows the broadcast going for us and i think it provides

a kind of support you know that even though you can't be here every sunday you can still be a part of it because the toilet. in jerusalem is very different this year the normally busy via dolorosa the way of the cross is empty the church of the holy settle to have closed its doors most easter services will be live streamed instead it's a highly unusual situation also for the local palestinian christians residents are under tight restrictions. probably talk to family. or. smart we might. not used to think so many. in the last 2 millenia at least but this year will be a tough year we want. wherever people celebrate this easter
